Warm sunshine makes a day worth noting... and a lovely memory for when days are not so bright.
The notebooks in this Ro-Biki 'Texture' Series convey the texture of the paper cover which has been accentuated by applying a wax finish.
The name of this notebook is 'Tonoko-iro' (砥粉色), a light beige-yellow colour in the traditional Japanese palette. It is named after the fine clay powder left when sharpening a knife on a whetstone.
The colour of the tonoko dye comes from trace elements in the clay and can depend on the specific region in Japan where it is mined, ranging from greyish-white to red. The powdered clay can be used as a base or pigment for traditional lacquerware but this yellow shade of tonoko is popular for kintsugi.
The cover's pattern is embossed into the paper by rollers. The texture and colour are enhanced through a waxing process which also gives a slight transparency where the wax soaks into the paper. This gives the notebook a vintage feel, intended to become worn and aged over time.
This smaller sized notebook contains 60 sheets of premium Japanese paper which is compatible not only with pencil and ballpoint but is also excellent for writing with a fountain pen or dip pen.
A cotton thread binding completes the look of this handy notebook.
The notebook measures 8.8cm (3½") wide by 12.5cm (5") tall and is about 0.4cm (about ⅛") thick.
Made in Japan.
