The notebooks in this Ro-Biki 'Texture' Series convey the texture of the paper itself, accentuated by applying a wax finish.
The name of this notebook is 'Fushi-iro' (節色 or 臥色), a traditional Japanese plant dye that results in the muted grey-brown colour of its waxed paper cover. It combines 'fushi' which mean 'un-dyed' or 'untainted' and 'iro' which is the Japanese word for 'colour'. This dye was commonly used in Japan's Edo period, a peaceful and culturally rich era from around 1603 to 1868.
The embossed pattern of the cover is pressed into the paper by rollers and the traditional colour, extracted from the shiba-ki tree (also known as ubame oak), is deepened through a waxing process. The wax also gives the cover a slight transparency where it soaks into the paper. The whole effect has a vintage feel which will become worn and aged over time.
This smaller sized notebook contains 60 sheets of premium Japanese paper which is compatible not only with pencil and ballpoint but is also excellent for writing with a fountain pen or dip pen.
A cotton thread binding completes the look of this handy notebook.
The notebook measures 8.8cm (3½") wide by 12.5cm (5") tall and is about 0.4cm (about ⅛") thick.
