Crack open the sake barrel and get the party started! These traditional frogs and rabbits are leaping about in anticipation.
This charming greetings card features characters from Chōjū Giga, famous Japanese scrolls depicting human-like animals frolicking and having fun. They are joyfully breaking open a sake barrel in a traditional celebration known as kagami biraki. This opening ceremony symbolizes good fortune and new beginnings and can be seen at weddings, special events, corporate launches and New Year’s celebrations.
On the front of the card, a frog leads the karaoke with a cry of 'soredewa minasama go shōwa kudasai', Japanese for 'Everyone sing along!'
Inside is a pop up scene where frogs and rabbits start the celebrations by breaking open the sake barrel. 'Oiwai no kimoshi o komete' ('With a celebratory spirit') they shout and then exclaim 'Yoisho!' as they heave the hammer to crack open the barrel.
