This compact, portable brush calligraphy set is great for artistic types who want to add Japanese characters to their artwork or for anyone wishing to study Japanese writing.
The fine versatile brush allows you to write in a delicate font which is useful for letters, cards and etagami as well as for adorning your paintings and collages.
The brush and traditional solid ink can also be used for sumi-e painting, the ancient technique of using black ink on paper to express minimal, elegant lines and washes of colour.
The set contains:
- A two-piece retractable calligraphy brush.
- Solid sumi ink block.
- Sumi ink stone made from natural stone.
- Japanese fabric carrying/storage pouch in dark blue with a traditional geometric hemp leaf design printed in gold.
How to use the sumi ink block:
- Place a few drops of water in the inkstone and grind the sumi stick in a circular motion.
- Add more water to dilute the ink to your desired shade.
- Apply the ink with the brush supplied or with your own brush or nib.
Additional information:
- Japanese sumi ink is a traditional water-based ink made from soot and a natural bonding glue derived from animal bones. It is not vegan.
- You can wash off the ink whilst it is still wet however, once dry the sumi ink is permanent and waterproof. It may stain your clothes or furniture so please take care when using or storing the ink.
