Fragrant, delicate blossoms come early in the year and herald the Spring. They symbolise the good health and endurance that saw us through the Winter months.
You may know about 'sakura' (cherry blossom) in Japanese culture but plum blossom or 'baika' also has important symbolism in Japan.
This pretty pale blue plate depicts branches of sweet plum blossom against the icy skies of early Spring. The dark brown stems contrast with the white of the petals and blue background.
The plate has a semi-matte finish with rustic mottling and some slight speckling in the design.
On the underside, the plate has a mottled blue-grey colour and features a traditional brush-stroke 'enso' circle design in dark grey.
The plate has a curved depth to it, the height being just over 3cm from the base to the upper rim, and would make a great serving plate. It would also be good for serving salad, pasta or sharing dishes such as yakitori, sushi or other side dishes.
The plate is about 23cm (just over 9") diameter and about 3.2cm (about 1¼") in height.
Safe for microwave oven and dishwasher.
Made in Japan.
